Today is my 10 year wedding anniversary. 10 years ago when I was in Italy, really in love, young, thin, tan, well rested . . . . I was certain I would be back in that same spot celebrating with my DH today.
Funny how when you are young and in love you don't realize how much you don't know. How silly, stupid you are really. How in the heck would I ever manage to get my butt and that of my husband's and not the butts of my children to the romantic Italian lake region right now? Foolish notion.
David and I were married at Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, Italy on Lake Como. It was true magic. We didn't want a "wedding" not in the customary sense of a "traditional wedding". At the time so many of our friends were getting married and we were on wedding and bride over load to say the least. For that I have always been thankful. Our day was quiet, relaxing, simple, beautiful and, in comparison, ferociously inexpensive.
I wore a simple dress, the hotel arranged for some music to be played, some flowers for me to carry and a non-english speaking Italian man to take photos. We had nothing to do with any of the planning, other then a couple of e-mails and to be sure to be in the right place on the right day.
The ceremony, in English, was simple, light and relaxed and then we were whisked off in a vintage wooden speed boat for dinner on a little island in the middle of the lake (also, by surprise, arranged by the hotel). There was talk of changing clothes . . in the end, I opted to stay in my garb and I think it was a good decision. There was something very "James Bond" about speeding across the lake with my veil flying.
Bellissima.
Oh I do want to go back, and who says it need be on an anniversary or pre-determined mile-stone year. One day we will return, full family along or not. I can't wait.
Laurie- Wow, that sounds like such a beautiful wedding day. I'd love to see more photo's!
